Odin is an advanced low-cost satellite for astronomical and atmospheric research, launched on February 20, 2001 from Svobodny in Russia. The main instrument is a radiometer, operating in the frequency range 486 - 581 GHz and at 118.75 GHz. Its double-reflector telescope has a 1.1 metre primary and the front-end amplifiers are cooled for maximum sensitivity. A 3-axis stabilisation system provides a pointing accuracy better than 10". The aeronomy objectives aim in particular at studies of key species for the ozone chemistry both in the stratosphere and the mesosphere, of water vapour and the formation of aerosols in the polar regions and the of coupling between the upper and lower atmosphere. Astronomical observations specifically address the key molecules H2O and O2. With the very successful operation of Odin we have demonstrated that small satellites can provide results equalling and sometimes surpassing much larger and far more expensive projects. Odin is a Swedish-led satellite project, funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (TEKES) and Centre National d'Etude Spatiale (CNES). The Swedish Space Corporation has been the prime contractor for the development. The paper highlights design features, development methods and in-orbit performance.
