The use of satellite orbit perturbations in the study of solid earth and ocean tides is discussed. The means by which tidal coefficients are determined from satellite orbital perturbations is considered, including the computation of a precise satellite orbit from position measurements, the extraction of tidal perturbations from the various orbital perturbations, and the analysis of the tidal perturbations. Requirements to be met by satellites serving as the basis of tidal studies are indicated, and satellites which have been used for tidal studies are noted. Results of satellite studies concerning the determination of the parameters of the lunar M2 and O1 tides, and the effects of ocean M2, O1 and N2 tides on the lunar orbit are presented, and areas in which further progress is expected are pointed out.
