We report the presence, in an immature Brazilian oil shale (Irati), of C 19 ---C 26 tricyclic triterpanes, present as mixtures of stereoisomers. The C 20 components have been identified by comparison with synthetic standards as 13 (H),14 (H); 13 (H),14 (H); 13 (H),14 (H) and 13 (H),14 (H) isomers. By extrapolation, all fourC 21 homologues and the C 23 -C 26 ,14 (H) and 13 (H),14 (H) isomers are also shown to occur. The geochemical significance of these findings is discussed.
