The Dark Energy Survey Camera is an extremely red-sensitive 500 Megapixel camera that will be mounted at the prime focus of the Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. In survey mode ( 30% of the duty cycle), DECam will obtain high precision multi-bandpass observations over 5000 sq. degrees near the South Galactic Pole. The goal is to extract information on the dark energy equation of state, w(t), from several distinct analyses.
As these Survey observations include continuous image collection at a 100 second cadence, observational quality analysis requires execution of basic data reduction routines in near-real-time on images 1GB in size. In addition to providing downsampled images for immediate visual inspection, the "Image Health" tools presented here are designed to automatically provide a more detailed analysis to DES observers (as well as Community Users of the Blanco) regarding observing conditions, as well as any potential failures in a component of the instrument or telescope. In a manner similar to SExtractor--though significantly faster--the Image Health algorithm finds a number of bright objects in (multi-extension) FITS files, and calculates basic characteristics such as background, flux, FWHM, and ellipticity for these objects, along with the mean characteristics of the entire focal plane.
We conclude with a description of how these tools will be implemented in the DES data analysis pipeline, as well as their broader applicability for the astronomical community.
