Analytical expressions are derived for the optimum choice of integration times for photon counting photoelectric photometers. The expressions are applied to simultaneous photometry of star and sky background as well as to conventional photometry in which star plus background and background alone are observed sequentially. The gain in efficiency over commonly adopted ways of choosing the integration times is discussed.
