There has been significant recent progress on understanding the termination of the first stars era, on estimating the rates at late times of their supernovae and on studying the formation of the first galaxies. We will review the implication of these recent results on the observability of first light by the James Webb Space Telescope and discuss possible preparatory observations that might be done before JWST is launched. Supernovae of Population III stars, in particular, might be very rare and might need to be identified by other means in order to be studied by JWST.
