Scientific paper

By the mid-nineteenth century, astronomy in the United States was a productive and growing discipline. It was visible, relatively well-financed by both the private sector and the federal government, and entrenched in the college curriculum. Training was available for individuals eager to enter the field. The discipline lacked only one major component: there was no adequate publication vehicle to ensure rapid dissemination of information.
