Long term nighttime Na temperature measurements in the mesopause region are presented for the period from 1991 to January 1993. The results were used to study the thermal structure and seasonal variations of the mesopause region at a midlatitude location. Two temperature minima were observed at 86.3 +/- 2.5 km and 99.0 +/- 2.9 km altitude. The temperature of the lower minimum was coldest at summer solstice and warmest one month after winter solstice suggesting a wave-driven diabatic circulation. The temperatures of the upper minimum fluctuate without an apparent seasonal pattern. The observed annual patterns of mesopause altitude and temperature can be explained based on the seasonal variations of these temperature minima. It is suggested that the lower temperature minimum in the mesopause region plays the role of the mesopause as it is commonly known.
