Scientific paper
The photoelectric light curves and period variations of six eclipsing binaries displaying solar-type activity, RT And, SV Cam, WY Cnc, CG Cyg, UV Psc and ER Vul, are examined based on observations obtained between 1979 and 1981 with the 0.5-m Askania reflector in Collurania-Teramo. Flaring activity, a kind of damped oscillation, and a variability of the light curves on a time scale of days or months are noted, though it is suggested that the stellar surface spot coverage may not be the unique interpretation of the observed light curves. Other problems in interpretation include the question of the evolutionary linkage between these binaries and both the classical RS CVs and W UMas. For almost all the objects in times of minimum light, meaningful second-order terms in the quadratic fitting of (O-C)s show either period increasing or decreasing, and the third body hypothesis for the (O-C)s of SV Cam is suggested.
