Exceptionally favorable conditions for observing Saturn's disk and satellites will occur during the upcoming period of minimum ring opening. During 1979-1980 the ring plane will be crossed 3 times by the earth and once by the sun, and the night side of the rings will be turned toward the earth for two extended time intervals. The angles of earth-sun elevation above the ring plane, and Saturn's phase angle are graphed for the indicated period. A possible program of earth-based observations of the Saturn system is discussed in view of experience gained during similar observations in 1966.
