Daily height values of the 10 mb constant pressure level were used to derive a parameter for the mean zonal circulation between 10-30 N and 40-60 N. This parameter was compared with absorption measurements made at several stations located mainly in the middle latitudes. From the time series of both quantities, variations in a frequency range around 1/40/D were extracted and compared. Occasionally large correlation coefficients were obtained for certain time intervals and single stations. Yet no systematic relation was found when such time intervals were synoptically analyzed utilizing absorption data from several stations. Thus, the significance of even large correlation coefficients estimated for single stations is reduced. If it is assumed that large scale absorption fluctuations reflect dynamical processes, it may be concluded that probably no general dynamical coupling between the stratosphere and lower thermosphere exists in a frequency range which is of interest for the study of planetary wave propagation.
