Four categories of spaceborne active microwave sensors used for observation of the earth are discussed: imaging radars, scatterometers, altimeters, and rain radars. For each type of instrument, the paper describes the objectives and applications, the operating principle, the specific technologies used, the history of its use in space, and future projects.
