Information from the log of cosmonauts Savinykh and Titov on observations of noctilucent and mesospheric clouds from space in 1985 and 1988 is presented. The equatorial mesospheric clouds (EMCs) discovered earlier by Kovalenko and Ivanchenkov differ significantly from polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs). The genesis of PMCs and EMCs are considered in the light of the hypothesis of the cometary origin of water in the upper atmosphere.
