A high temporal resolution (64 ms) analysis of 50-MHz backscatter signals is presented. All four spectral types, 1 to 4, are found to be composites of many harmonically structured bursts. It is noted that since the spectral components in individual bursts may occur at frequencies that are not exact multiples of the ion gyrofrequency, time averaging over many bursts usually smears out the harmonic content, resulting in broader spectral peaks. It is suggested that the resulting smoothed spectra may be caused by instabilities other than the electrostatic ion cyclotron instability.
