High resolution measurements of gamma-radiation, greater than 15 MeV, emitted from the galactic center were made during balloon flights in 1971 and 1975. The prominent feature observed in 1971 is a 29 deg wide enhancement lying along and just below the galactic equator. It is primarily confined and has an energy spectrum which appears to be dominated by pi deg-decay gamma rays greater than 50MeV, but could contain a significant contribution from bremsstrahlung or Compton processes at lower energies. If this radiation is diffuse then cosmic ray collisions on the molecular hydrogen between 4 and 8 kpc from the center is the most probable source; however, its limited extent is puzzling. Data from 1971 and 1975 show that the galactic gamma-rays detected appear to be primarily confined; concentrations that could be due to localized sources are apparent. These concentrations are near some interesting objects including a supernova remnant and two bursting X-ray sources. Also discussed is a search for bursts of high-energy gamma rays.
