The COSMOS (Coordinates, Sizes, Magnitudes, Orientations, Shapes) apparatus used in association with the 1.22 m Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring, Australia, is discussed. The apparatus detects and measures position and structural details of images of stars and galaxies previously recorded on photographic plates. Three modes of operation are available: low- and high-precision measurement and centering. Design criteria for COSMOS are presented, and the operation of its major systems is described.
