Periodic fluctuations in energetic particle fluxes are often observed at geosynchronous orbit with periods of 30 to 45 minutes, close to the drift period of the particles as calculated using the gradient and curvature of a simple dipole field, which is suggestive of a resonant interaction between the particle drift and an external driver. In this study, we examine particle data from a number of geosynchronous satellites and present statistics on their occurrence rates, duration and frequency distribution. In addition, we model the drift periods of electrons using more complex magnetic field models and compare these results to the observed fluctuation periods. Results suggest that the fluctuations may result from very-large oscillations of the magnetotail, sometimes called ``tail flapping''.
