High resolution IUE observations of the 07.5 III star xi Per, taken between 1978 and 1984 are presented. The spectra reveal extensive variability in the Si IV resonance line doublet, characterized by shortward displaced narrow absorption components and much broader lower velocity features. Profile fitting is used to estimate central velocities and column densities of these varying features, and the plausibility of the shell ejection model is discussed. The continual presence of narrow absorption implies fairly frequent shell ejection, with subsequent episodes revealing a broad feature eventually narrowing and merging into the high velocity narrow absorption component.
