A GEOS-2 crossing of the dayside magnetopause during a geomagnetically disturbed period was selected to show clear signatures of the interconnection of field lines through the magnetopause. Pitch angle distributions of electrons and ions are found to be strongly asymmetric with respect to 90 deg. The asymmetries are interpreted in terms of field-aligned particle streaming. Comparisons of electron spectra provide evidence that the streaming electrons observed in the magnetosheath originate in the magnetosphere. Simultaneous ground observations with radar show regions with an outward flow and an antisunward flow at the poleward border of the field of view. The longitudinal width of these regions are 4 deg in angular extent on radar plots, or 200 km at geostationary orbit. The lifetime of these apparent merging regions is 6 to 12 min.
