The authors have obtained time-series spectra of comet P/Halley over 8 nights in November 1985 in near backscattering geometry (phase angle 1° ≤ θ ≤ 10°). They have used the spectra to search for enhanced backscattering of the type reported earlier in comet P/Stephan-Oterma and to study the time dependence of the molecular band and continuum emissions. No phase related brightening at minimum phase greater than ≈10% was observed in P/Halley, however two continuum brightness outbursts were observed on UT November 15 and 21. The first of these was associated with a comparable increase in the gas band emission strength, the second was not. The authors interpret the absence of a gas emission increase in the second outburst as evidence for the possible existence of a dust crust on the nucleus. No time delayed brightening was seen at a coma position 40 arcsec west of the nucleus suggesting that either the grains were ejected at velocities below the escape velocity or that they were short-lived icy grains.
