The comet Churyumov-Solodovnikov (1986 IX) was discovered as a result of photographic patrolling of several selected regions near the plane of the ecliptic in the constellations of Sagittarius, Aquarius and Capricornus. Patrolling was carried out with wide-field powerful telescopes of the Fessenkov Astrophysical Institute of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences - on the Kamenskoye Plateau with the 0.5-m meniscus telescopes and at the Coronal'naya Station with the 0.40-m Schmidt telescope. On five plates obtained during July 14 15, 1986 by K.I. Churyumov and V.V. Solodovnikov, we found a new comet designated as 1986i = 1986 IX. The comet was observed in the interval July 14, 1986 March 25, 1988. On the basis of observations taken over the interval July 14 Oct. 31, 1994, the authors used the Encke method with due regard of the perturbations of all planets to compute a system of orbital elements. The original orbit of the comet 1986 IX was determined while it was entering the planetary system at a heliocentric distancer = 50.132 A.U.: Epoch = 1957 Aug. 4.0 TT,T = 1986 Apr. 25.98119 TT,e = 0.999120,q = 2.63337 A.U.,ω = 157.79532°, Ώ = 133.85082°,i = 114.70008°. The elliptical elements of the original orbit show that the comet comes from the nearest region of the Oort Cloud, located at the heliocentric distance near 3000 A.U.
