Ground-based and airborne observations of the CO(7-6) line towards 16 Galactic sources of star formation are presented. The line was detected in nine of the sources. The CO (7-6) line is seen in sources with a kinetic gas temperature of 25 K, even though the J = 7 level of CO is 155 K above the ground state. It is found that the (7-6) emission comes from gas with densities above 10,000/cu cm. New gas components are found in Cepheus A and NGC 2068.
