A systematic analysis of the solar-wind data supplied by the plasma experiment on the ISEE 2 satellite is presented; results are based on 479 ion energy spectra and include a large number of observations of backstreaming particles upstream of the bow shock. The relative abundance of the backstreaming protons with respect to solar-wind protons is found to be, on the average, less than about 1%. In addition, some backstreaming-proton energy spectra are characterized by the presence of a dominant peak, localized in energy, while others consist of a very flat distribution extending up to at least 11 keV.
