Scientific paper

Soviet activities in satellite geodesy and the establishment of a center for geodynamic and astronomical investigations in France are described. Aspects of geodesy and astronometry covered in 21 papers from 13 countries include (1) determination of the flattening of the terrestrial geoid; (2) satellite triangulation with passive and active satellites; Doppler methods; satellite lasers, and very long base interferometry. Particular problems addressed relate to the accuracy of world geodetic data from satellite observations; correcting the coeficients of a planet's gravitational field due to the nonspericity of its surface; the theory of artificial Earth satellite motion; improving a satellite's orbit from photographic observations of the moon's surface on a short arc; and processing measurements and results from space geodesy.
