We describe the design of the new system for handling observations metadata at the Science Archive Facility of the European Southern Observatory using Sybase IQ. The current system, based primarily on Sybase ASE, allows direct access to a subset of observation parameters. The new system will allow for the browsing of Archive contents using searches on any parameter, for off-line updates on all parameters and for the on-the-fly introduction of those updates on files retrieved from the Archive.
