Beginning in 1964, a program for the systematic search of asteroids and their further study was conducted by Y. C. Zhang, the former director of the PMO (Purple Mountain Observatory), and Jiaxiang Zhang. Photographic observations with a 40 cm double astrograph yielded the discovery of three comets and more than 100 asteroids that qualified for numbering. Two of those asteroids, (2077) Riangau and (2078) Nanking, are Mars-crossers.
