SZ Tau is a short period Cepheid with a nearly sinusoidal light curve, and has been reported to undergo minor period fluctuations since it was first observed at the beginning of the 20th Century. New UBVRI photometric data obtained from the Mount Laguna Observatory has been used to obtain a passband-averaged present-epoch period for this star of P = 3.1473 ± 0.0053d, using iterative fixed-period least-squares Fourier fitting. The epoch of maximum light (HJDV = 2 453 316.52038) has been determined for each passband and these are found to correlate nearly linearly with the passband effective wavelength. Passband phase lag may contribute to the existence of colour-colour loops in Cepheid variables. Published radial velocity data has been used to perform non-linear least squares data fitting for the Balona solution to the star’s mean radius, and this has been found to be R = 42.2 ± 3.0RSun. Discussion of the results and fundamental parameters of SZ Tau will be presented. We would like to thank Dr. Paul Etzel of the University of California, San Diego, for the grant of considerable observing time for this project. This work has been supported in part by Canadian NSERC grant to E.F.M.
