A preliminary report is given concerning observational studies of star formation based on image-tube scanner spectrophotometry of some 500 faint emission-H-alpha stars and broadband IR photometry of about 300 such stars. The extinction observed toward the stars is attributed to a small amount of material affected by stars that have already formed or are in the process of forming. An H-R diagram is presented for 66 stars in the Tau-Aur dark-cloud complex. The stars are found not to be distributed all across the diagram, suggesting that many young stars are seen along their convective tracks. It is shown that typical stars in Tau-Aur have ages of the order of 300,000 years, but that star formation seems to have occurred over the range from 100,000 to 2 million years and is therefore signally noncoeval.
