The experimental procedures and the experimental results of the observation of characteristics of cosmic-ray hadron interactions in uniform-type thick lead chambers at Pamir are outlined. The structure of the 60 cm-thick uniform-type lead chambers used in this experiment and that of the 120 cm-thick lead chambers which the Moscow State University (MSU) group analyzed previously are presented. The chambers are composed of three units, and each of them has an area of 10 sq m. After exposure, the X-ray films were processed in Russia and then sent to Japan for analysis. Experimental results based on the exposure of 16 sq myr and the comparison with MSU results based on the exposure of 26 sq myr are described. The routine naked-eye scanning of the dark spots due to electron showers is applied on X-ray film to measure the direction and energy of electron showers. The origin of the observed showers is either a gamma-ray or a hadron. A shower which starts deep in the chamber, or whose transition curve deviates much from that of a pure electromagnetic cascade shower, is identified as a hadron-induced shower. The basic results on cosmic-ray hadrons at the altitude of the Pamir (590 g/sq cm) are presented, and excellent mutual agreement is observed between the present results and those of the MSU group.
