Hakucho, the X-ray observation satellite launched in Feb. 1979, has detected several gamma-ray bursts. The X rays from the burst occurring 1981 Oct. 16 at 23:53 UT, hit the satellite from the direction almost rectangular to the spin axis, which enabled us to observe the detailed spectra in X-ray region by the side counters of the satellite. The event has been observed also by PVO and SMM.
Combining the Hakucho and PVO data, analysis has yielded a detailed time profile of the event, energy spectra at 4 s intervals covering the energy range of 1-55 keV and 120-2000 keV, and a source location. The total energy of the event beyond 1 keV is (5-10)×10-4 erg/cm2.
The spectra beyond 100 keV can be fitted by both functions of exponential type with kT=150-200 keV and of f-f emission type with kT=400 keV, while considerable changes with time are observed for the spectral shape in the range of 1-55 keV. This is the first time that the spectral change through many time sections has been observed in detail for X rays associated with gamma-ray bursts.
