While the notion that blueshifts can be associated with compact objects is not generally appreciated, it is presently demonstrated that observable redshifts can arise from material freely falling toward a compact object and toward the observer. By considering the possibility of photon capture by a black hole and the blocking of photon trajectories by neutron stars, it is shown that a wide range of blueshift and redshift values is observable.
