Francis has compared the equivalent width distributions of broad-line region lines from a large QSO survey to the predictions of various models of continuum emission. His main conclusion was that accretion disc models predict too many QSOs of high equivalent width and therefore are ruled out by observations. Here we generalize his theoretical models by considering the possibility that line emission is anisotropic. In addition, the consequences of an obscuring torus close to the orbital plane are studied quantitatively. We show that a moderate asymmetry in the line emission alleviates the problems of most theoretical models in the optical domain. The presence of a thick obscuring torus is, however, required for the continuum emission from a thick accretion disc and for emission from relativistic jets.
