Many astronomical objects are axisymmetric but have isodensity surfaces whose flatness varies with radius. Consideration is given to mass distributions whose isodensity surfaces are concentric, coaxial oblate spheroids whose ellipticity e is allowed to vary with the semimajor axis a of the spheroids. Formulas are derived for the potential, in the quadrupole approximation, and for the projected surface density.
