Several examples from the results expected from the Hipparcos mission are presented to illustrate the needs that will arise in order to maintain the level of precision achieved and to extend it to many more objects. The emphasis is on: (1) the maintenance of the Hipparcos reference system that will degrade at the rate of 2 mas/yr (astrolabs and optical interferometers are considered the most likely candidates to be chosen for stellar observation); (2) the extension of the Hipparcos catalog to more stars, using astrographs, Schmidt telescopes, and photoelectric meridian circles; and (3) the determination of new parallaxes and double star parameters, in particular, with CCD astrometry, astrometric photometry and various interferometric techniques. The ultimate objective of all these observations and catalogue work will be to obtain a consistent set of positions at epoch and proper motions in the extended Hipparcos extragalactic system.
