The rapid and straightforward reconstruction of low light-level, randomly-translating images is presently undertaken by the centroiding method, in which the detected frames are sorted according to their photon counts, then centroided. Separated averages are then obtained and compared with the centroiding frames. Attention is given to an algorithm for the retrieval of phase in one-dimensional centroided images; computer-simulated data are used to test both the theory and the reconstruction technique.
