An objective automated technique for the identification of OB associations is proposed. It is suitable for a reliable comparison of the association diameters in nearby galaxies. As a check the OB associations in M 33 were identified. The dimensions of the OB associations range from 30 to 250pc. The average diameter of the stellar associations in eight galaxies with CCD photometry is 80pc+/-15pc. The utilization of the average size of OB associations as a distance indicator is discussed.
