The presence of emission bands from the c 1 Sigma u - - X 3 Sigma g - transition of O2 in the terrestrial nightglow is demonstrated by the computer generation of synthetic spectra. Spectra were calculated for transitions from all three of the metastable states of O2 lying within 1 eV of the first dissociation limit (A 3 Sigma u plus, A-prime 3 Delta u, c 1 Sigma u -) based on reported Franck-Condon factors, band positions and electronic transition moments, and compared with the airglow spectrum of Broadfoot and Kendall (1968). It is found that only half of the oxygen emission in the region 3100-4500 A observable from the ground is due to the A-X bands, with the A-prime-a and c-X bands making up the remainder at an intensity of 100 R each. The 02(c 1 Sigma u -) state, which is the dominant emitting species in the Venus nightglow, is thus shown to be present in the terrestrial nightglow, although at an intensity more than an order of magnitude lower.
