O. Yu. Shmidt was the founder of the modern theory of the formation of the Earth and the planets by the merger of solid particles and bodies in a gas-dust preplanetary cloud. He was the first to state the problem of planetary origin as a comprehensive astronomic-geologic-geophysical problem, and he devoted the last fifteen years of his life to analysis of its physical and mechanical aspects. Shmidt enlisted a wide range of specialists from different disciplines to develop this theory. He organized creative scientific work and formed a special department for work on the development of the theory at the Geophysical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. As a result, studies by his disciples have gained international recognition.
