We present classifications and properties for 45 intermediate-redshift galaxies selected by the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). This digital objective-prism survey was designed to detect galaxies with strong Hα emission at redshifts out to 0.095, but follow-up spectra revealed that ˜2% of the galaxies are at higher redshifts. Most of these were detected via strong [O III] ø¿ emission and have redshifts in the range z = 0.29 - 0.42. Recent follow-up spectra in the far red (? A) show that 13 galaxies are Seyfert 1 or QSOs, 17 are Seyfert 2 galaxies, and 15 are star-forming galaxies. We compare the properties of these galaxies to those of their low-redshift counterparts from KISS. We find that the intermediate-redshift Seyfert 2 galaxies closely resemble their local counterparts. The [O III]-selected star-forming galaxies tend to have very high star-formation rates and above-average luminosities. In addition, they display a luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) relation that parallels the one describing the low-redshift star-forming galaxies but is offset by a factor of more than 10 to lower metallicity. The implications and possible evolutionary scenarios for these objects are discussed. This study makes use of spectra obtained with the Hobby Ebberly Telescope.
