Results are reported from photometric observations and statistical analyses of the O 7774 A (3/5/P yields 3/5/S) transition in quiescent solar prominences. The goal of the study was to derive accurate values for the ratio between the population density of the upper level of the observed transition relative to the total O population. The data were collected with the 25 cm coronagraph/3 m spectrograph at the Mees Solar Observatory. A strong temperature dependence was found for the transition, indicating that the O 7774 A/Na 5890 A ratio is of use for diagnostic studies of quiescent prominences. The possibility of applying the ratio as a diagnostic for spicules is discussed.
