The properties of the transition of a stable family of periodic orbits to complex instability are investigated. Some known properties of complex instability and H:pf bifurcations are reviewed, and two simple volume-preserving mappings are introduced and used as numerical tools for exploring complex instability and its neighborhood. The bifurcating periodic orbits and invariant curves in section space are determined, as well as other bizarre objects. The results for complex instability are then applied to a three-dimensional model of a barred galaxy. The properties of the mostly stable three-dimensional family of 4/4/1 resonant periodic orbits are presented in two different galactic models. The phenomena associated with complex instability in the galactic potentials and in the mappings are compared. Most features are found to be present in both cases. The consequences of complex instability in a growing bar are discussed.
