The one-dimensional time-dependent hydrodynamic computer code BOREAS (Odstrcil, 1984) is applied to the solution of interplanetary shock waves. The steady-state solar wind between the inner and outer boundary of a system is used as the initial background. Then, at the inner boundary, a square-wave pulse is specified; i.e., increased values of density, velocity, and temperature are kept constant for some time and then returned to their original steady-state values. The pulse generates a shock wave whose propagation through an interplanetary medium is investigated. A detailed analysis of the formation and propagation of the shock wave is given, together with the results obtained under different time durations of the pulse at the inner boundary. A critical discussion of some previous results is also presented.
