A theoretical study of droplet dynamics and evaporation in various flow configurations is presented. This dissertation consists of two parts which reflect two different but related strategies of spray investigations. Two computer programs are developed, one solving the complete Navier-Stokes and energy equations in both liquid and gas phases for droplets in rotating flows, while the other uses a simplified approach for spray modeling. In the first part, the transient droplet/gas interactions in various rotating flow configurations are investigated theoretically from different perspectives relevant to practical spray combustors. The investigated configurations include: (1) droplets encountering locally rotating flows (turbulent eddies, for example), and (2) rotating droplets suddenly exposed to a quiescent environment. The effects of the induced secondary motion, thermocapillary stresses, and rotational Reynolds number on heat transfer in both phases are examined. In the second part, physically accurate and computationally efficient models are developed to analyze spray dispersion and evaporation. Comparisons are made with available experimental results on single and multiple evaporating droplet streams in room temperature. The model is finally used to simulate spray evaporation dynamics in a high temperature environment.
