The evolution of a system of points in a given potential is simulated. With a density distribution proportional to r exp (-n), and a logarithmic potential, a stationary state following the r exp 1/4 law of de Vaucouleurs (1977) is obtained. If this simulation is followed to the Galaxy and to M31, it is found that n = -4 for the Galaxy and n = -3 for M31.
