Variability of compact extragalactic radio sources with timescales of a few hours to days and amplitudes of up to 25 percent has been detected at 6 and 11 cm wavelengths. Numerical calculations are presented to explain these variations by refractive scattering in the interstellar medium. A single screen model with clouds of Gaussian electron density profiles reproduces the observations well for a given set of conditions.
