The Liapunov characteristic exponent and the Poincare approaches are used here to study the Sitnikov problem. It is found that the chaotic region grows as the orbital eccentricity of the main bodies increases and that the width of the chaotic region varies as the eccentricity to the power 1/2. The results demonstrate again that the method of mapping can be used to study the secular state of celestial motions.
