A numerical study of the three-dimensional nonlinear problem of ionospheric plasma inhomogeneity on a uniform unbounded background is presented. Approximate analytical formulas which are applicable to the real ionospheric plasma are obtained and validated by comparison with numerical calculations performed using modal values of the transport coefficients. The short-circuiting of background plasma currents is analyzed, and estimates for the cloud deformation rates and their scales at various stages of plasma evolution are presented for different nonlinearity levels.
