A computer program is developed which solves the full nonlinear Einstein equations with one Killing field on a 3-torus as a Cauchy problem. Spacetimes are generated in a fully constrained manner with only the true degrees of freedom being propagated. The two gravitational degrees of freedom are described by scalar fields defined in terms of the Killing vector. The remaining metric quantities are found by imposing the constant mean curvature gauge condition and solving the constraints explicitly during the evolution of the spacetime. The ultimate aim of the project is to generate evidence for or against certain conjectures of classical relativity based on studies of spacetimes with greater symmetry. Such a program makes possible the experimental determination of the generic behaviour of solutions to the field equations.
