The objective of ESA EXPERT Reentry Vehicle is to collect in-flight data concerning critical aerothermodynamic phenomena. Among those, catalycity is a crucial problem because it directly impacts the TPS design margins and, if properly managed, can lead to precious mass savings. Several samples of various catalytic materials are planned to be inserted on the surface of the vehicle. The main contributor to the gathering of information on material behavior and catalycity modeling will be the measurement of their temperature histories. A series of computations supported by EADS Space Transportation have been performed by CEA-CESTA (French Atomic Energy Agency) in order to characterize the flowfield interaction with the wall, to help to define this payload. The results presented here address the issue of heat fluxes sensitivity to various parameters. They have been used as guidelines for the payload identification.
