Number-magnitude counts of galaxies have been determined to a
completeness limit of J = 24.5 from automated scans of 4-m and Schmidt
plates. On the assumption that the galaxy luminosity function and
K-terms are well-understood, it is concluded that the counts indicate a
moderate amount of galaxy luminosity evolution.
